About NERRA — the adaptive CEFR English test

NERRA is a free online English level test built on the CEFR scale. In about 25 minutes it assesses five skills — grammar & vocabulary, reading, listening, speaking, and writing — and reports your level from A1 to C1 with instant, per-skill AI feedback.

Unlike fixed question sets, NERRA is adaptive: it adjusts question difficulty to your answers, so strong learners are not bored by easy questions and beginners are not buried under impossible ones. Speaking is assessed from your recorded voice and writing from your own text — the two skills multiple-choice tests cannot measure.

The test is free. If you want a verified human assessment, a qualified teacher will review your speaking and writing in detail for $15 — see pricing. Ready to know your level? Start the test.

Frequently asked questions

What is NERRA?
NERRA (nerra.online) is an online English level test aligned with the CEFR scale. It is adaptive: the difficulty of the questions adjusts to your answers, so the test takes about 25 minutes instead of hours. The result is a CEFR level from A1 to C1 with per-skill feedback.
Is the NERRA English test free?
Yes. The full adaptive test — including the AI evaluation of your speaking and writing — is free. There is one optional paid service: a detailed review of your speaking and writing by a qualified teacher for $15.
How long does the test take?
About 25 minutes. Because the test is adaptive, it does not show you every question in the bank — it narrows in on your level and stops when it has enough evidence.
Which skills does NERRA assess?
Five skills: grammar and vocabulary (usage of language), reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Speaking is assessed from your recorded voice answers and writing from your written responses — not from multiple-choice questions.
What levels can I get?
NERRA reports CEFR levels from A1 (beginner) to C1 (advanced), overall and per skill. The final level is a weighted combination of all completed modules.
How is the test scored?
Multiple-choice modules are scored by an adaptive engine. Speaking and writing are evaluated by AI against CEFR criteria, and you can optionally have them re-checked by a qualified teacher (the $15 expert review) for a verified human assessment.
In which languages is NERRA available?
The interface and feedback are available in English, Russian, and Thai. The test itself always assesses English.
